Congratulations to Bethel Christian of Ohio the 2003 Great Lakes Regional JBQ champions! Bethel Christian and Clearcreek Christian Springboro Ohio swapped places from the Ohio State meet. Where Clearcreek won and Bethel finished 2nd. This also is Ohio's second 1 and 2 finish of the year as Capital City and Clearcreek finished 1 and 2% at the Corvette Invitational. All us folks from Ohio can only hope that this trend continues at dare I say the National Invitational.
I'm starting to say this every year, but this year was the most closely contested Regional event in years. It seems like every year the the gap from top to bottom gets closer. For the first time since I started keeping track of the all time scoring average at the Great Lakes Regional not one team cracked the top 10. This years top scoring team Clearcreek Springboro was not even close at 170 a match.
With the new rules for qualifing for Nationals each Regional takes on a greater significance then in the past. The five State Champions finished in the following manor. (Clearcreek Christain, Springboro(2), Bethesda Sterling Heights (5), Calvary Church Napervillle (7), Trinity Chapel (8) and Self Control Elkhart (11). Thus a finish in the top nine was required to qualify for Nationals. Congraulations to Bethel Christian (1), Lafayette First (3) Patience Elkhart (4), Clavary Naperville 3 (6) and Capital City Columbus (9) for qualifying for Nationals. Capital City qualified for Nationals for the fourth straight year, joining Highway Tabernacle (1997-2000) as the only churches from Ohio to do so. Highway also went to Nationals six times in seven year.(1994-2000) Clearcreek Chirstian has joined them with six visits in the last seven years.
While the Great Lakes Region has been the top region in the Nation for years the rest of the nation is catching up. If this years Regional is any indication Nationals will be an event to remember. I think a 1st and 2nd place for Ohio sounds about right? That seems to be the pattern anyway!
